Title“. . . His Majesty’s Good Servant, But God’s First”: What Saint Thomas More Has to Teach Us About Conscience and
Its Formation

Presenter Bishop Ronald W. Gainer, DD, JCL

DescriptionThe claims of conscience are at the heart of the religious freedom controversies. We will look to England’s great witness to conscience to explore the true nature of conscience. Unlike many public officials then and today, Saint Thomas More did not quarantine his conscience from his public acts. Is conscience merely the individual’s subjective conviction of right and wrong or, as More wrote, “the fruit of education in the truth”?
